VISITING LECTURE ON MAPPING AND MODELING USING THE DRONE TECHNOLOGY BY MR MANJU GUNAWARDENA - TRAINING OF 151 UAV BATTERY

Under the direction of the CDS and the Commander of the Army, the Colonel Commandant and Commander - Artillery Brigade made the 15 UAV Regiment fully operational in the classic role and inaugurated the training of newly raised Drone Battery on 17 June 2020 at Artillery Complex Panagoda. Adding a new dimension to the task carrying out by 15 UAV Regiment, a visiting lecture was conducted by Mr Manju Gunawardena,an inventor and senior research scientist on Drone and Nano-technology,to educate the student of the course on Mapping and Modeling using the Drones.

The lecture covered the mapping of a defined area using Image Stitching Software such as Pix4D and DRONEDEPLOY using Mavic 2 Pro Drone.Further, it was elaborated that this technology can be so effective to measure the distance so accurately, analyze the elevation differences, calculating volumes of objects and changes in the environment over a period of time such as soil erosion, deforestation, plant health and cultivation. A practical session was conducted mapping the area of Artillery Complex,Panagoda and modeling it 3 D. In addition, students of this course showed a keen interest in experiencing of the new lesson and actively participated in the practical conducted on mapping and modeling. Further, it is expected to conduct another visiting lecture series by Mr Gunawadena on Tracking and Autonomous flying and programming.

The Commanding Officer of 15 UAV Regiment also attended the session with student of the course.
