ARTILLERY ROARS AT FIELD FIRING RANGE – TEMPITIYA
2024-09-05In accordance with the training directive for the year 2024, the School of Artillery successfully commenced the second stage of Artillery deployment and live firing exercise at the Field Firing Range - Tempitiya, from 29 August to 04 September 2024. The artillery equipment fired included 120 mm mortars, 122 mm howitzers, 130 mm guns, 152 mm gun howitzers, and 122 mm (MBRL). Most remarkably, the 122 mm (MBRL) made its grand return, firing for the first time since 2009.
The exercise included the participation from students of Young Officers’ Course 49, Long Gunnery Staff Course (OR) FD - 19, Gun Nos' 1 Course (Non-Tradesmen) - FD 393, Technical Assistance Trade Test Course 2024/2, Post Depot Course - FD 227. Senior Officers, Young Officers, and Other Ranks from Artillery units also attended the event. The exercise showcased a formidable display of firepower and tactical precision and provided a unique opportunity for all gunners to gain live experience and develop their gunnery knowledge at both gun end and observation post.
The field firing session was witnessed by Major General S A Kulatunge RWP RSP VSV USP psc, the Commander SF (East) together with senior ground commanders, training school commandants the Commander Artillery Brigade, COs of Artillery units, trainees and staff of ATS Maduruoya and SFTS. The successful execution of the exercise was supported by Staff SF HQ (East) and 24 Infantry Division, subordinate formations, responsible government authorities, and public agencies.
