2010-05-25The United Nations Organization (UNO) generally known as the United Nations (UN) is a global organization founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for peaceful dialogue. Its stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achieving of world peace. To facilitate carrying out of its mission it contains multiple subsidiary organizations.
At present there are 192 member states, that is nearly every sovereign state in the world. The organization has six principal organs: the General Assembly (the main deliberative assembly); the Security Council (for deciding certain resolutions for peace and security); the Economic and Social Council (for assisting in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development); the Secretariat (for providing studies, information, and facilities needed by the UN); the International Court of Justice (the primary judicial organ); and the United Nations Trusteeship Council (which is currently inactive). Other prominent UN System agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The UN's most visible public figure is the Secretary-General, currently H.E. Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, who attained the post in 2007.
The organization depends on member states for financial and other support. When troops for peacekeeping in Haiti were sought by the UN Sri Lanka being one of the oldest members of the organization offered to help. Sri Lanka Army has been an active partner for peace in Haiti ever since. The Gunners too have been active in this arena. Several contingents from the Regiment have served with inherited commitment and dedication and another contingent comprising 4 Officers and 54 Other Ranks left the Island on 25 May 2010.
The Gunner wish them good luck and success every step on the way in their journey towards bringing peace to Haiti.
